Author: Jacqueline Woodson
Genre: Autobiography, Memoir
What this book is about: This book is sort of an autobiography but it is written in verse. The
book is about the time of the Civil Rights Movement and about four kids: Hope, Dell, Roman, and
Jacqueline. Each of them has a special talent. Hope has his songs, Dell
is incredibly smart, but Jacqueline can write. Her dad left her when she
was young; they only have their mother. So their 'dad' is Grandpa. They
have two places they call home: where they live in the North, New York City, and where their grandparents live in the South. But which is really home? This book tells you how to
listen to the things around you, and to stand up for what you believe
in.
Your opinion: In all, I thought it was a great book, but I think it could be a little
less confusing. Also, I would have liked it more if it had described more
protests to unfair treatment and more standing up for your rights.
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Who would like this book: I think that people who like reading poetry or realistic fiction would like this book.
