Author: Ann M. Martin
Genre: Realistic Fiction
What this book is about: Rose (Rows) is a girl with Asperger's syndrome who loves
homonyms/homophones and rules. Her mother is gone, and her companions
are her father, her Uncle Weldon, and her dog, Rain (Reign). Everyone
doesn't really understand her except her Uncle Weldon and her faithful
dog, Rain. She got Rain when her father found her as a
stray behind the building he worked at. No one knew who her owners were.
Rose's father gave the dog to (two, too) Rose (Rows) as the only gift
he ever gave her. But then a hurricane hits and Rain (Reign) goes
missing. During the search for her dog, Rose (Rows) discovers exactly
who Rain's owners were. Will Rose (Rows) do the right thing and let Rain
(Reign) go?
Your opinion: I really liked how Rose was always doing the right thing (in her
opinion), and with this book you can see inside someone's mind who on
the outside you wouldn't know very well. For example, she gets pretty
upset when someone breaks a rule or makes a mistake, and has to be taken
out into the hallway, but with this book you can see exactly why, and
how things makes sense to her. I don't have anything that I didn't like about the book, and I think
this book really deserves to be in the Newbery finals (or even win!).
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Who would like this book: I think a lot of people would like to read this book, but especially
people who like 1) dogs, 2) a chatty protagonist, or 3)
homophones/homonyms. I also think people who have read Out of My Mind by
Sharon Draper or A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass would really like
this book. Basically anybody could like this book!
